Nikon TC800-1.25E ED: Removing Tab to Use with 500 PF

All,

Hoping someone will be able to shed some light re: using the Nikon 1.25 TC on a lens other than the native 800mm f5.6. I guess my question is: has anyone here managed to remove the tab (see circled within the attached image) & if so:
  1. is it essential to remove the outer chrome ring in order to be able to access the tab?
  2. Did you use a normal screw driver, or is there a requirement for a specialist screwdriver/head?
  3. Assuming you've managed to use it with a lens other than 800mm f5.6, did you like the results (IQ, AF performance etc)?
P.S. I have seen the below discussion on another forum, but it does not address all of the points above (esp points 1 & 2 above). Many thanks in advance.
