Nikon Z6ii White auto focus box in Auto Area AF mode?

I'm serious looking into buying the Nikon Z6ii. Something I remember seeing while watching some vids about the camera was the mention of the AF area box being white until you place it over the subject you want to track at which time you press the OK button then it turns a different color while tracking. I guess this was the case with the Z6 as well.

I shoot a lot in snow conditions and am concerned about being about to see that white box as I'm trying to place it over something like a fox in the snow. Anyone know what I'm talking about and have you had any problems? I might be worrying about this for no good reason.

I called NPS tech support and the person I spoke with didn't know what I was talking about.

Yes, the tracking box starts off as white in tracking mode. Not sure if it's really that big of a problem though - I see it pretty well even against a bright light. :)

Also, tracking mode is probably not the mode you'll use most of the time anyway with it. For the most part, I'd think you'd probably use single point or maybe dynamic for most wildlife in YNP. I know for mammals, I very seldom use anything but single point - and that one is red.

Thanks Steve. I wasn't sure if the focus box was white in any other modes. Happy to hear you didn't find it a problem seeing. Agree with you regarding whether I would use that mode anyway. Was surprised the guy at NPS didn't know what I was talking about. I haven't had any of the Z cameras yet.

I just changed my order from the Z7ii to the Z6ii, that along with several other items which are on their way. I wanted to have time to play around with it before heading to YNP.

Ive used the Z6Ii with subject tracking on mammals. It's quick to capture the eyes, then recompose. It really "grabs" the area and then you can recompose and place those eyes wherever you want them in the frame. It seems even quicker than single point when recomposing. With that said, when there is time, I primarily use single point.

The subject tracking turns green once locked.

Having lots of fun with the Z6II

Quick note - it only turns green in AF-S mode. In AF-C mode, it stays yellow. Just wanted to point it out for the BBAF shooters :)
