Nikon Z9 + 1.4x + 400mm f/4.5 not focusing?

I have FW 5.0 for the Z9 and 1.10 for the lens (I don't see any FW stuff for the TC). On a bright sunny afternoon I am sitting in my backyard trying to check out bird detection. W/ the TC 1.4 I get nothing - without it I am getting quick and locked on AF.

I have tried different focus areas (wide, 3D, auto) and none of them find the bird w/ the TC (and they *all* do w/out it).

Any suggestions?

I’d probably try cleaning the electrical contacts on the TC and make sure it’s properly seared and clicks into place.

Do you have another lens that accepts the 1.4x that you could test it on? That would narrow down the source of the problem.

It seems to work fine on my 100-400 - but I haven't done bird detection, that was going to be my next test.

I had a similar problem with my F-mount TC, and cleaning the contacts took care of the issue.

OK - cleaned the connections and it is working fine. Very strange, but I'll have to keep an eye on it. [Tested 400mm f/4.5, 400 f/4.5 + 1.4TC, 400 f/4.5 + 2.0TC and all worked as expected.] Thanks for the suggestion Dave!
