Ominous D850 shutter sound

Uh oh, my D850 is making an ominous sound during burst shooting. One actuation out of the burst sounds different than the rest. Sounds a little crunchy, for lack of of a better description. Its always near the end of the burst, say, number 5 out of 7 or 8 of 10. It happened a month or so ago too, sound became more distinct until the camera seized, and I got the ERR message. No buttons would work, not even the on off switch. Only removing and reinserting the battery cleared it out, and the odd shutter sound was gone. Now the sound seems to be slowing returning. Sounds to me like a trip to Nikon may be in order. Anybody experienced this?

It sounds like it needs a trip to Nikon. I'd guess the shutter has something going on.

Very sorry to hear this. It must be the week for sending equipment back to Nikon. My 200-500 made the trip last week. Hoping to hear something from Nikon soon about ETA on getting it fixed. Hope your D850 fix is quick too.

Sorry to say, this sounds like the intermittent sound I heard my D500 making for a few weeks before it went "sproing" and the shutter failed completely. I got the ERR message and had to turn on and off a couple of times, as well. The camera is sitting in the NY repair facility as I write this.

Any time estimate for the repair, or cost?

I had a lens in for repair a couple of months ago and that went very quickly, they only had it 4-5 days before shipping back. This shutter repair is taking longer, they've had it two weeks so far. The estimate was $305 if I remember correctly.

I recall there is one company that makes nearly all the shutters for all major Camera Brands.
It was at a time where the camera industry was averaging 6% failure rates across all devices and in all areas, up from 3%.

The particular shutter manufacture also has a history of issues, and to my knowledge since the D300 D700 to still today.
My Df uses the same shutter as the D600, as we know that camera had major issues.
My DF had similar issues to the D600 shutter issues despite denials offered.
IMPORTANT....My Shutter sounded louder and louder then clunkier then quite then clunky then quiet, then failed.
One blade came off and damaged the sensor as well.
Nikon Australia have always offered 5 star service and support, Hence I stay with them. They took very special care of the issue for me despite the warranty being out.
One of my D850 units is sounding louder and louder and clunkier, then quiet for while them louder again, so in the new year its going in to Nikon...........I am saying like Steve said, time to send it in, don't trust it, the camera has warned you with a cough.
As to damaged sensors from shutter failure, there is a USA company that replaces the damaged removable filter on the sensor for about 1/4 of the cost of a complete sensor from Nikon, that filter is usually what gets damaged not the actual sensor peice.
NOTE I hear club members and friends having the same issues with Canon over the years no different to Nikon etc.

Your camera has warned you, time for the Nikon Hospital for a check up.
Merry Christmase to you and laa saty safe.

Thank you for this information. My D850 is having a rest, and as soon as the photo budget recovers from a big purchase, it’s going in.

Did they say what was wrong and or what they fixed? Was it under warranty?
For anyone still following, I got the D500 back from Nikon service today and it looks like everything is working well. The paperwork said the following services were performed:

Replaced shutter mechanism
Replace rubber grip
Adjust autofocus
Checked Bayonet mount
General check and clean, which included image sensor cleaning

$308.66

Glad you got it back. Price doesn't seem too bad either.

I got a note from Nikon a few days ago they are fixing my lens under warranty. Hopefully it will be coming back soon.

That seems reasonable, not as pricey as I would have guessed. Thanks for the info.
