I just put my Nikon D500 with Nikkor 200-500mm on a Wimberly Mono-Gimbal and on my Monopod and I would like to protect the camera and lens as I take it in and out of the SUV.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a padded case that I can put over the camera and lens, that is open on one of the sides so I don't have to detach the set up from the Monopod??

I'm not even sure what that "bag" or "case" is really called to search for it online.

So far I have just been laying it down on a thick blanket and cover it when I'm going down dusty roads.

Any suggestions? An old pillow and a towel???

As usual...I'm probably overthinking this!!!

What you’re looking for sounds pretty unique and I doubt you’ll find one “off the shelf”. You might need to go to to a motor / marine trimmer and work with them to design and put something together. You could do it double layer skin with a layer of 5mm foam sandwiched between to provide added protection. Use Velcro or a good zip to close.

That's more or less what I do when driving around with a big lens mounted to a camera. I lay them on an old pillow either crammed between the driver and passenger seats or lying on the passenger seat if no one is there. I don't have a monopod mounted up, but it's how I transport a camera and long lens combo ready to use. I suspect you could do something similar and if you have to deal with a lot of dust then add a towel or pillowcase over the combo.

In my film camera days, I bought a large gym bag. I inserted a solid piece of heavy duty foam padding into the bag which I purchased at an arts & crafts store. I cut out the middle of the padding so that it conformed to the shape and size of my 400mm lens and camera body with at least 2 inches of foam left below the camera and lens as a cushion. I would use that setup to carry the attached lens and body. It was a really snug fit. I would also place a piece of foam on top of the camera when in transport. Worked out really well. And it cost practically nothing compared to the price of these camera bag. Maybe $30.00. And if you don’t like it no big deal. Worth a try.

I am assuming you mean something along these lines ? Picture on the Left Camera Cover. This is very similar to the suggestion made by Thern - you may also want to take a look at this which is a much better quality product >>> Camera/Lens Cover .. apparently they are pretty well padded to keep the camera and lens protected Plus you can keep it on while the Camera and Lens are attached to the Monopod - its also guaranteed waterproof and can be used all year round ...

hope this was of some help
