I was fairly close--about 30 feet away and the kestrel was about 20 feet high. Kestrels around this site seem secure and almost "friendly". They allow ppl to approach them closer than most birds do.

I should've mentioned that this image was taken with a D500 + 500 PF + 1.4 TC III at f/9. I'd hardly used the TC before but was greatly impressed with its sharpness.

That's great! Ours don't really want you to close. They take off pretty quickly. I might have better luck when it is warmer out.

We are fortunate to have kestrels locally, but they are also skittish.
Cools little critters and lots of personality.
