I’m in the process of programming either the f1 or f2 button on my z8 to deactivate subject detection. Looking for suggestions on what works best for you. All suggestions are welcome.

Mostly a matter of ergonomics and what's easier to use along with what other functions you might use more frequently and rather have on the more natural button to reach.I’m in the process of programming either the f1 or f2 button on my z8 to deactivate subject detection. Thanks Dave.. Switching to single point is an option to disable subject detection is something I didn’t consider. Thanks. I actually setup the f2 for RSF(3d) for action settings.Mostly a matter of ergonomics and what's easier to use along with what other functions you might use more frequently and rather have on the more natural button to reach.
One alternative I've been using lately is to assign Single Point to one of those buttons (Fn2 on my Z8) and I'll often hit that when I want to disable subject detection. Not great in action situations where a wider group sans SD might make more sense but my main SD problem subjects are typically mammals with large round ears and not flying so a quick change to Single Point, moving the focus point as necessary and nailing the focus tends to work for me and of course switching to Single Point implicitly disables SD in problem cases.
I currently have my RSF that switches to Animal SD instead of the default Bird SD on my joystick center press (easy to feel the texture on that button with EVF to the eye) and have been playing with Single Point on Fn2.
Lot's of ways to approach this so not a lot of wrong choices.
That’s what I use when I want to disable subject detection. It also ensures I’m focused exactly on what I intend. Thanks Dave.. Switching to single point is an option to disable subject detection is something I didn’t consider. Thanks. I actually setup the f2 for RSF(3d) for action settings.
Rassie, thanks for your response. I was looking for a menu option that directly selected subject detection under custom settings and I couldn't find it. But your recommendation for your Fn2 setting made me give it a second look and then I realized that you can unchecked the box for subject detection and turn it off when setting up the RSF-Hold. Thanks again.I'm using Fn1 to cycle through focus modes (AF-C single, Wide area Small, Large, 3D, etc.). Fn2 (RSF-Hold) is used to turn subject detection on and off.
This is what I do also.Instead of turning off SD entirely, I often need to switch between Bird <> Animal modes.
The ideal would be a toggle setting similar to Cycle AFmodes. The workaround I use is setting a subset of the SD as the top item in MyMenu on the Display button. This is quicker in action than using iMenu.
I use Z9 but the Z8 should be similar.
Thanks for the advise. I had a button mapped to my menu as well. I may go back to that. I’m going to see how the setup i mentioned above works out. I may switch it back to my menu.I have the display button mapped set to turn subject detection on/off using recall shooting functions. I don’t use this method very often. I also have subject detection as the top item in My Menu and the FN3 (lock) button set to pull up my menu. This lets me change subject types and turn on/off relatively quickly, but not as immediate as RSF. I tend to switch subject types more than turn on/off. As far as which button to map, you will probably want to experiment with it in different places and prioritize things you do frequently on function 1/2 and put things you use less frequently on other buttons

I originally had that setup using my menu but for now I’m going to try the RSF button to directly shut it off if needed. Honestly, I haven’t used the camera enough to even need the option to shut it off. I’m still trying to figure out what options i’m comfortable with. This is what I do also.
