Quick TC question.

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I have a 500f4 G and a TC 1.4ii and I cannot tune the combo enough to get acceptable images.
The lens is fine on the D850 and the D500 so I have to assume the TC is the issues. Would it make sense to purchase a 1.4iii the latest version? This TC is the latest so I am assuming it is compatible with the latest iterations of F glass? Of course a 600f4 would be nice but I'm not sure where my equipment purchases will take me so the newer TC would be a less expensive option.

Heading on a trip in a couple weeks and would like the ability to get to 700 f5.6 if adequate light.
Thank you all in advance.

You may have a bad copy of the 1.4x TC or could have an issue with a slightly bent mount on the lens or TC.

But yes, that lens is compatible with both the II and iii versions of the TC-14. Personally I had pretty similar and very good results with either version of the TC-14 on my 500mm and 600mm G series lenses but either TC in good condition should work very well.

Is the TC1.4ii compatible with the 500pf? I may end up with a lighter combination to carry some day and if I'm buying a TC anyway, may as well get one that will work with it as well.
THank you so much.

You could put the 500mm on the D500 to get 750mm....or put the 500mm on the D850 and shoot in DX....

Yeah, I thought of that and will do that at times. For the Great Grey Owls 750 will be too much at times, so I was planning on using the D850 with the native 500 and occasionally with the TC and keeping the D500 paired to a 150-600 zoom In case I need to get in closer or back off for an inflight image.
Contemplating purchasing a 500pf at some point to pair with the D500 eventually as a lighter combination for summertime with eagles and loons at my cabin in northern wi. I wanted the extra megapixels of the D850 for the Boreal Owls which are a bit further out from my understanding.
Thank you for your reply. Appreciated.

I set up a button to immediately be able to switch between FX and DX............... no need to move lens around to a different body.
