Yes, this was indeed on the East side. I hiked in about 6 miles beyond where the gates blocked access to cars, and had St. Mary Lake entirely to myself.

Put a mid September Trip to the East Side on your Bucket List. I have many trips in that part of the Park my favorite is Two Medicine Lake and Many Glacier . IMO... that drive from the town of East Glacier over to Many Glacier in mid September is the best photographic part of GNP for Fall Foliage.
