So in the non-COVID future, I'm hoping to head to S America and do some rainforest bird photography. Ecuador has my interest, especially. Anyway, those who have traveled to or live in the rainforest habitat, would I be best served with a monopod that would require less open ground to use, or a tripod that would require more area but provide more stability? I know there's probably not a "right" answer, just looking for opinions. :)

I take and use both. It's incredibly tricky because every situation is different. You can find the same animal in the same spot two days in a row, but on one day it's bright enough for a monopod, the next it's more overcast and tripod time.

From a versatility standpoint, especially for animals in the trees, a monopod is faster. You often have to change position / height quickly and you can't beat a monopod for that. Overall, gun to my head, if I had to pick just one of the two, I'd use a monopod. At least for where I've shot so far. However, if you can take both, I think that's a good idea.

Like you say, no right answer - or at least no answer that applies all the time.
