how can I turn off the range finder that pops up when looking through the lens

What you mean with the range finder? On what body is that lens attached?
Hi , welcome to the forum.
The rangefinder will only be visible in Manual focus mode, AND if you are using Manual override in Auto focus. (when you move the focus ring )
If you wish to stop the "rangefinder" from popping up in Auto focus, Manual Override can be switched off using Focus Menu A16. (Z9)
I have , and I think many others have this selected to OFF . It stops your focus getting bumped accidentally.
