During my recent trip to Panama, we were fortunate enough to be able to photograph the Maroon-chested ground dove!

From eBird: Very scarce and rarely seen small dove of foothill and mountain forest and edge, usually with patches of seeding bamboo. Most often seen in fast direct flight; rarely seen perched or feeding in low vegetation or on the ground. Male deep blue-gray with purple bands on the wings and a maroon breast; white outer tail feathers striking when tail is spread. Female with dark bill, and brown overall with dark reddish-brown bands on the wings; rump and tail less rusty than similar female Blue Ground Dove of humid tropical lowlands.

Also, due to a shoulder problem, I left my 600mm TC at home (gasp!) and used the new-to-me 600mm f6.3 PF lens. 1/500th @ ISO 3200. 99% of the time I shot the lens wide open.

Outstanding shots, Karen. With these results you can travel with that lens all the time, I know I would. I would not want to cart that heavy 600mm F/4 TC beast around. 30 Years ago - maybe, but not any more.

I am a sucker for doves, what a beautiful bird. Great shots! The f/6.3 seems to be doing everything you need it to for these shots. :)
Thank you so much for commenting. We were told this bird was very rare......a dove....but I didn't expect such a beautiful bird! I didn't even have a chance to use the lens before the trip. I trusted @Steve s assessment and the images I had seen by others. This lens did not let me down. Due to the heavy rains and low light.....would I have been happier with the 600mm TC? YES! But this lens still delivered.
Beautiful. Congrats on spotting and grabbing great shots of this scarcely seen bird.
Thank you! So kind of you to comment!

Ah.....thanks! You always post such wonderful images! I put this lens in some very challenging situations......and it performed very well!

Superb job Karen, what a beautiful bird and you certainly captured it in a great setting.
Thanks so much, Louie!
Nice Karen, Love the second shot!

Gladyou liked them!
Fantastic images!
Thank you.
Superb shots, Karen!
Ahhh......thanks!
Excellent capture and narrative on this rare beauty.
Thanks for sharing.
The 600pf lens performed superbly in your capable hands.
Gavin
Thanks, Gavin! At 3.1 lb.......versus my 7.5 lb 600mm TC ...............the 600mm was a joy to use! Did I miss my 600mm TC? You bet I did! But the 600mm PF exceeded my expectations at a fraction of the weight and price!
