This male Red-Bellied Woodpecker lives in the forest behind my property. I only see him occasionally when he flits from one tree to the next. He never comes into the backyard.
Yesterday was the exception. We had some snow, and for whatever reason he found the suet in the feeder irresistible. I shot this picture through a closed window - didn't want to open a window or door and frighten him off.
I don't like making pictures of wildlife that also show man-made elements in the image. I prefer a very natural look. In this case I couldn't resist since I've never seen one of these so close. Pity about the feeder and fence, but what can one do? This is a processed Jpeg since I don't have the appropriate software currently to edit NEF files from the Z6ii.
Z6ii with Nikkor 200-500mm.
