Driving down the road not far from home today I saw a hawk perched in a tree on the edge of a farmer's cornfield. I decided to stop and take a few photos. It's a busy road though, so I had to make a u-turn to go back past the hawk, and then make a u-turn again to approach while looking for a safe spot to pull off the road. As I approached the hawk took of and flew into the field where it landed. After looking around there for a while the hawk took off again.

It's only when I looked at the images that I realized what happened. The hawk perches at the end of the field and looks out for prey in the field where it's easier to see in the open on the snow. It must have seen something so it flew over and landed where it was either listening or looking at something that was moving around under the snow. The hawk hopped and scratched in the snow a few times to find the prey but it was unsuccessful so it took off again.

My experiences with the hawks in this area the last couple of days has convinced me to rather attach my wife's Z50 to the 200-500mm lens to give me that extra reach for this work. At the distances where I see these birds the full frame does not cut it. These images are not good enough to print but I post them here for the story they tell.
