Being Saturday and a chilly 2C outside today I decided to go look for hawks in the area. I was surprised at how many hawks I found. It's like they are reluctant to migrate south. I've said this before and I saw it again today; pull up a car next to a perched Red-Tail and it's off. They just don't stay put.
This specific one was an exception. I saw it sitting in a tree next to the road, and it wasn't high off the ground either. I pulled up just a little bit past her, stopped the car and stuck the lens out the open driver's side window. I was surprised that she stayed put, for a while, anyway. After allowing me a few shots she took off and flew up to the top of a power line pole close to the same tree. It was then that I saw she had caught a mouse in the grassy, snowy field next to the road. I again got a couple of shots before she flew off with her lunch, to go eat it somewhere in peace and quiet. It's interesting that she also grabbed some grass stalks together with the mouse.
