Last weekend we had a little cold snap in the morning and it was around 50 deg. The Robins decided to burry themselves in the Mulch pile and spread their wings to warm up. First time seeing this behavior.

VERY interesting behavior! Nicely photographed.
Thanks, I thought it was a little strange, there was at least a half a dozen in the mulch pile. Maybe someone else has seen this behavior? All the years watching these birds, this was a first.
 
They could be doing what's called anting. Were there ants in that mulch pile?
Interesting theory, however I did not see them eating anything or digging around. Just laying, some with their beaks open, not sure what's with the open beaks, now to hot and cooling off?
