I have a feeling that the background detracts from this image. Thoughts?

We have to deal with the background that comes with the bird. Sometimes that's not ideal, but ultimately it's more about the bird. The background is secondary to that.
If the background bothers you and your editing skills are up to the task you could darken the background while brightening the bird. You could also then add some blur to the background to make it smoother.

If you made this image on the west coast of USA/Canada, it's more certain that this is an Anna's Hummingbird rather than a Ruby-throat. The purple/pink colour of the gorget in this bird is typical of Anna's hummingbirds. Also, the white around the eye suggests an Anna's.

You could be right about the particular species being Anna's. This was taken near Quartzite, AZ so that makes total sense. I just discovered the ebird app so I should get a little better at identification going forward.

Beautiful image, nonetheless. Well done. (y)

Not on my laptop that I'm viewing now. Your signature looks white, but nothing in the picture approaches white, and the bird looks underexposed to me.

The background in the image is already brighter than the bird. Personally, I don’t think the bird is underexposed, but it could be brightened a little bit for personal taste. It would not make sense to do that without selectively darkening the background at the same time, otherwise the background will be too bright and completely overpower the image.
