I have a feeling that the background detracts from this image. Thoughts?

Beautiful image, nonetheless. Well done. You could be right about the particular species being Anna's. This was taken near Quartzite, AZ so that makes total sense. I just discovered the ebird app so I should get a little better at identification going forward.
Just curious Woody, is your monitor calibrated? It would help me understand why it looks a bit dark. The background is fine, IMO. The image looks a bit dark on my monitor, FWIW.
The background in the image is already brighter than the bird. Personally, I don’t think the bird is underexposed, but it could be brightened a little bit for personal taste. It would not make sense to do that without selectively darkening the background at the same time, otherwise the background will be too bright and completely overpower the image. Not on my laptop that I'm viewing now. Your signature looks white, but nothing in the picture approaches white, and the bird looks underexposed to me.
