Usually they wait until I'm close then they explode out of underbrush to scare the crap out of me.
This one cooperated and gave me a little bit of a tail display.

Just 🤩 wow! Love these guys and a great image. I’ve watched them on a “drumming log” beating their chest with their wings.
 
Nice one. And yeah, I know all about them bursting off the ground right in front of you. One did that with me and then alighted in a nearby tree where I was able to get a few images.

Thanks, Grouse of all types are just fascinating to watch. I had the pleasure of capturing one drumming a couple of years ago and it's still one of my favorite sequences.
