The Salton Sea Wildlife Refuge is a spectacular winter spot to capture images of birds during their migrations. The Sonny Bono National Wildlife Refuge, Unit 1 (yes, that Sonny Bono of Sonny and Cher) is a particular favorite of migratory birds. This image of Sandhill Cranes and Snow Geese was shot at dawn before the flocks flew off for their all day foraging sessions in the surrounding fields. By 8 am this pond and others around it were totally devoid of birds. They will return to roost in these ponds at sunset.
