A flock of Sandhill Cranes hangs out every winter about an hour from our house. My wife and I get over there to photograph them a couple times a winter. We went out yesterday and found a few of them in the corn fields. I liked how the corn rows lined up on this shot. The heat shimmer coming off this field was horrible. If you look closely, it is evident. Outside temps were about 30 degrees but the surface temp of the field was most likely a lot warmer. You could see the heat shimmer just looking across the field. But as a wildlife photographer, we play with the hand we're dealt.

The main flock that overwinters here is about 3,500 +/- a few.

Nice shot! I go to see them in Northern Indiana a couple times every winter. We had about 30,000 birds 2 weeks ago which is the highest ever counted. It seems the population is getting bigger every year, it wasn't that long ago that we peaked around 12,000 birds in late November.

Interestingly, a trip to Jasper-Pulaski about 5 years ago is what started the journey down the ever slippery slope of my wife and I becoming wildlife and nature photographers. I was close to taking an early retirement after 36 years in the IT industry. Now, my office doesn't involve a concrete building or a cubicle in the middle of a bunch of other cubicles. I like the view of my new office much better. Money was a lot better in the IT business butI may live long enough to enjoy the fruits of my career.

These are also in Indiana, SE Indiana. It is a very well known location locally no secret. I don't think it would be good for a hundred thousand people to descend on this tiny area but all the locals know about it.

I often think the ones here are "overflow" from Jasper.
