I took these two months ago on a family trip to Galveston, TX. This was my first time photographing a Sandpiper (and also my first time lying on my stomach in wet sand for an extended period of time to photograph a bird haha). He was foraging in the shallows on the beach, and he let me get pretty close. The lighting was great.

Hope you guys enjoy.

Beautiful series Wade. I bet you're hooked now and will have a lot of wet sandy times laying on beaches coming up :)

Thank you! I wouldn't necessarily say I'm hooked on the wet sandy beach technique....haha. Next time, I want to have some type of waterproof pad to lay on. After a half hour on my belly, I was an absolute mess, which I don't mind at all, but it was very challenging to keep my gear clean afterwards. (from my neck to my knees was solid mud, as well as arms)

Anyone have any suggestions on lightweight, quiet, waterproof mat/pad for "laying down" photography? I'd be interested to hear about it.

I've used very thin mats sold as yoga pads before. I've also used backpacking sleeping pads (e.g. Ensolite) but the yoga pads are much thinner and roll up smaller. They can keep you dryer and cleaner but they also decrease your mobility as it's enough to move the camera and support forward but another thing to think about to also inch your comfort pad around.

Nice series, beaut light and low level images. For what it is worth, you get a "fishing suit" in PVC with attached wellingtons/gumboots. I have used it when wading in low level pans to keep the leaches of my legs. It is used by anglers catching trout in the water and works well to keep the lower half dry. A proper wet suit like surfers could be an option but maybe over the top. At least is should be warmer.
