I never heard of it either - or ever so one, but a small flock of them have taken over my feeder! Apparently they are native to India, but have established themselves in the southern US.

I have been seeing a growing population in S. California. Known in the pet trade as the nutmeg mannikin or spice finch, they may be descended from escaped or released pets.
