Scarlet Tanager

I know of a location where this bird breeds for the summer (I saw them here 2 years ago) but haven't had a chance to get to it until this past weekend. It's only about 10 minutes away but I had been focused on other target species this spring/summer. I wasn't going to end the summer without some Scarlet Tanager photos. Luckily there were two males here who still had their breeding plumage. They begin to molt back to their yellow/green feathers late in the summer before they had back to central/south America. This guy was more cooperative than the other. It's not easy to get eye level with a canopy species such as the Scarlet Tanager, but I was on a steep slope in the woods so I positioned myself looking down the slope so I was closer to eye level with some higher branches. The light sucked (typical for forest songbird photography) but happy I came away with something.

Beautiful! You’re very lucky to be in an area where they breed. Well done👍👍👍
