I've been very lucky over the last week or so with owl sightings and decent light. This is a short-eared owl at a local site on Friday. It won't be long before they head north for the spring and summer but hopefully I'll get one more trip in this week.

Wow! I’ve only seen owls 2x in my life. Heard them often, never seen pretty much. And never saw them during the day.

Surprised you only needed 1/800
Thanks.
Most owls larger owls are relatively slow flying and you can often get away with a relatively slow shutter speed. Add to that the fact that the light is often very poor by the time they are out 1/800 is fast for me! (I have a lot of images with a sharp face and 'creative' wing tip blur conveying motion :ROFLMAO: ).
I'm based in the UK and I'm not sure where you are based in the USA but there are a number of locations, particularly in northern states, where owls are reliably seen in daylight in the winter months. E-bird can be a useful tool in finding where they have been seen recently.

Thanks.

Thanks good to know on their speed. I shoot mostly hummingbirds, so I’m at 2000 to 3000, and other little birds that are flitting around.

I did not know E-bird could be useful for locating!

Winter-not a fan of cold. I’ve gone out in the 30s but I’m usually hiking. I hate cold weather.
