Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM FLD

B&H has the above listed lens on a special for $279.00. I would be looking to “replace/supplement “ the 18-55 Nikon kit lens. Currently shooting with a D3300, but upgrading to a D7500, which would allow a good general lens for both bodies.
Does anyone have experience with this Sigma lens? How might it compare to the 18-55 kit, which I have been generally pleased with. The f/2.8 is of interest, in that my primary shooting is Astro photography and landscape. Any ideas, suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I own it - thanks for reminding me :). I bought it as a backup lens for my D500, in case my main full-frame camera failed on a trip and I wanted something wider than 70mm. My copy of the Sigma is quite badly de-centered with the right side much softer than the left side. Center is sharp, good contrast, colour is quite neutral. For fun I just put in on a new Z50 and compared it to the little Nikon kit lens (the 16-50/3.5-6.3 DX lens). The Sigma is faster but in other respects the Nikon kit lens is nicer. I'm afraid that, living in Singapore, I can't do a star shot for you as a comparison!

JP, thanks for the response. I had seen in some of the other reviews that some folks had some issues with their particular copy, apparently exchanging in some cases with more positive results. Thanks again.

Shame you are not in the UK. I could have sold you my Nikkor 17-55 f2.8 - a fantastic lens for any Nikon DX camera - for not a lot more than the price of the sigma.

Darn COVID, that sounds like a good opportunity lost, but thanks for the thought?

No problem. Have you thought about getting a used Nikkor 17-55 f2.8? Over here that are sold over 1000GBP under the new price of around 1480GBP I'm sure that there are good ones out there. The Tamron 17-50 f2.8 might also be worth looking at if you want new rather than used

I no longer have a Nikon DX camera since I ditched my D300 that I used for travel/lightweight kit with the 17-55 f2.8 and and/or a 18-200vr. Nikon had an enhanced trade-in offer when I bought my D810 so I got way (and I do mean WAY) over the normal trade-in value for the D300 that was replaced with a Fuji XT-1. Loved it so much I sold it within 6 months but only as I fell over an XT-2 that someone got as a spare/backup camera but never used it other than giving it a test to make sure it was OK. It had under 100 actuations when I got it.

Ironically, the D810 was sold earlier this year to fund the purchase of an XT-4 - but only after I bought a D850 ;)

Now, for the first time in 10 years I don't have 2 Nikon cameras - but I do have 2 Fujis as I kept my XT-2 as it would not get much if i sold it and it has under 2000 actuations.

Here are a couple examples made with the Sigma 17-50mm F/2.8 on a Nikon D7500.
I also made some wonderful portrait images with it, but I can't show those without getting permission first.

Koos, not necessary on the portraits, these are perfect, both for what I was asking, as well as pictures themselves. Wow those are really nice, especially the barn scene, love it. Thanks Bill

Hi Bill, I am a new member, but anyway I bought the lens from B&H, for my Pentax camera. Like it very much. No problems, had it since
last year. Use it 99 % of the time. Sigma 17 - 50, 2.8 DC EX HSM. Hope this helps.

Excellent, thank you for sharing your experience also, that sounds great. Bill
