This first image is a favorite from a recent freeze. I was watching it and found it would kind of skip at it dealt with trying to walk on the slippery ice. Sometimes its claws would spin out not gaining traction. It was cool to watch even though it only lasted a couple minutes before it went into some shoreline grasses. I had been looking at the surface texture and thought "there has to be a shot here somewhere" and then I was greeted by this little Sparrow.

I like to be out into the time when there is almost no more direct light. It can of course be frustrating but when the variables align, it's so satisfying to me. What's funny is that dusk-twilight has been my classically favorite time for architectural work and is proving to be a similar lean now with my foray into birds a few months ago.

Just like in my commercial work, I tend to follow the light and anticipate what might occur and try to be there while looking for a shot to develop, or in this case, skip along into my view. I was watching the bird but of course you can never know where it may go or what it might do.

I was particularly inspired by the abstract surface visuals which were a result of some thawing on a thin overnight icing on a small pond. The late angle low light glow allowed the colors of the sky and trees beyond to still reflect in a nicely saturated way.

On a different day looking for interesting surface conditions, I found another Song Sparrow bopping around. These were nice to capture but they aren't as impactful as "THE SHOT".
