Thanks to Woody and Bill. To Bill: I owe the stable image to windless conditions in the prairie in early morning. I have seen garter snakes suspended a few feet above ground on prairie grass on two occasions, both times during early morning hikes. In my neck of the woods (Wisconsin), northern water snakes commonly perch on vegetation, usually above a body of water.
