I used OM-D em1 mark ii and Olympus 30mm f3.5 lens. It has extremely good mfd and has a reproduction ratio of 1.25 which times two is 2.5 that is how I got super close. I succeeded because I chose a very sunny day, which provided enough light to not use a flash.

No, I didn't. I tried really hard to get the entire snowflake parallel to the plane of focus. It was quite the exercise.
