Sometimes you just get lucky. Driving along highway 70 in St. Louis, my friend riding in the back says "what the heck is that?" I look over, and immediately pull over. This absolutely beautiful Solar Pillar rising into the overcast sky. Once again, the best camera is the one you have, and my Phone Samsung Galaxy does the trick. Solar Pillars appear as a shaft of light extending vertically above the sun, most often at sunrise or sundown. They develop as a result of hatted ice crystals slowly falling through the air, reflecting the sun's rays off of them. Because the crystals are hatted they fall slowly and vertically like falling parachutes, causing the reflected light to shoot straight up.
