These are about an hour from my home. They were shot at a local flood control impoundment. Over winter, the Corps of Engineers lower the lake to "winter pool" stage to allow room for spring runoff and rains. From about the middle of October until early March about 3,000 Sandhill Cranes congregate in the "mud flats" and hang out all winter. In addition to whatever they are eating out in the mud, the area is surrounded by corn and soy bean fields. This time of year the crops are all harvested and the cranes fly out from the lake each morning to the surrounding countryside to feed in the stubble. The first photo was shot a few years ago of some in a corn field just as snow started to fall. The others were all shot this fall at the mud flats. Check out the black mud on the one in the center of the 3rd photo. He's been digging for some good stuff it seems.

Yes, there was a collision and the one on the left saw it coming. It did not seem happy about the intrusion.
