Sony a1 I pre-capture set up

Any one who cares to share Sony a1 ii pre-capture settings? I used Steve Perry’s settings in his BIF book for a1, adding pre-capture (0.3 second). The terminology of “Subject Recognition” in a1 ii is very different from a1. They seem to be very confusing. Any suggestions on how to use the subject recognition together with other settings would be much appreciated.

It appears you have two questions here. Pre capture is simply writing files temporarily to the buffer in a loop. They aren’t saved until you actually take a photo. Pre capture has nothing to do with any subject detection or any other function. The only two choices you have is how long which you picked .03 which seems to be what most people do. Longer time is ok if you have slower reflexes. The second choice is if the back button or shutter release activate it when recapture is on. That’s it other than possibly assigning a button to turn the feature on or off.

Now for subject detection the a1 and a1MK2 work the same however the a1MK2 gives you additional subjects it can select. It also allows for the af box to look for more than the eye such as the head and body. I personally turn off body. Other than that there is no real difference.

David summed it up pretty well.

Pre-capture is simple....try 0.3s, see if you are getting all you want or too much and then you can dial it to 0.2s or 0.4s or whatever.
You can assign a button to toggle the feature on/off
You can tell it wether you want just an AF-ON to activate it or shutter release.

As for subject detect, I would select birds and then decide if you want it to do body/head/eye, head/eye or just eye. I found on the A9III I tended to prefer head/eye. It certainly helped with large birds like GBH to help avoid near wing focusing.

In A1 II, under the Subject Recognition > Recognition Target tab, you can further adjust settings for tracking and recognition range, persistence, sensitivity, and part. See attached manual

Good call. I totally forgot they had all that stuff added in as well. I think they have made it all too confusing.
Here is direct link to the descriptions of all those things in the online help guide: https://helpguide.sony.net/ilc/2440/v1/en/contents/211h_recognition_target.html
I'm going to have to study this and play with it when I get my camera.
Off the top of my head I'm thinking I'd start off with:
Shift Range: 1 or 2
Tracking Persistence: 5
Sensitivity: will need to test this but thinking 4 or 5 unless that is giving all sorts of false positives then maybe 1 or 2 will be best??
Priority set: won't matter as I'm keeping it in full Bird mode
Part: I think I will go head/eye as I found that useful to avoid near wings on the A9III
Nice to know you can set a custom key to change the Recognition Part on the fly if that becomes useful.

My experience with the OM-1 is:

1-Use AF-ON to initiate pre-capture and the shutter to write to the card. I don't have this option on the OM-1 and maintaining a half-press on the shutter for an extended period is a pain.

2-Always shoot in pre-capture whenever it is possible that the subject might do something interesting which is almost all the time. Jan Wegener also recommends this for the Canon R5-2

3-All I have is eye priority (when visible) for subject ID: Birds on the OM-1 and it has worked out well
