Sony A1 USB-C to USB-A ports on PC ? Firmware 1.35 --> 2.01 upgrade A1 failed to connect to PC (bad PC ports or Bad A1?)

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Thanks for your help in advance, as this firmware upgrade is driving me crazy and I'm trying to avoid sending my A1 to Sony Repair Service and blowing a $1000.

I updated firmware 1.32 --> 1.35 via USB-C to USB-C connection from camera to Mac laptop without issue.
1.35 --> 2.01 " " the same Mac failed as the A1 failed to reconnect to the Mac after "reset"
try again " " on ThinkPad PC failed ....... Tried both USB-C & USB-A ports Get a Windows bad USB device error
try again with Sony Support online with various ports and cables, one other Mac + one additional PC, all failed No comment from Support that the A1 would not connect to USB-A ports

I NOTED that the A1 will connect to the PC/Mac USB-C (small oval plug) port, but not to the USB-A (the flat rectangular plug) ports, of which there are 2 on the PC (Windows-11) Get a connection error on the A1 screen.

The cable that I am using says Sony on it and is USB-C to USB-A ( I think that this is the one that came with the camera)

So, can you A1 users confirm that the A1 will also connect to a PC USB-A port? If so, then I will hunt down an older Windows 10 PC with USB-A ports only to try the upgrade on.

Otherwise I have to assume that the problem is with the A1 and I will then decide to send it out to Sony for "repairs"

Note that once I get to 2.01, then one can upgrade to 2.02 via menu selection instead of the firmware upgrade app.

My big assumption here is that the upgrade app is not happy with the newer USB-C port but maybe(?) might work with the USB-A ports, if I can get them working on the PC.

Thank you all, one day I would like to share some of my pictures !

Did you do a full initialization before installing the new version?Did you remove the lens?
What's the transmission mode? You're lucky you didn't get a “brick”.
Go to Menu/Setup/USB/USB Connection, and then make sure Removable Disk is selected.

Try a different cable as well. Many times it’s that simple.

Yes, I was online with Sony support for hours, We reset the camera, settings on Mass Storage, used a high quality cable USB-C to USB-C that worked for the 1.32 --> 1.35 upgrade. Then, on the same setup during the firmware upgrade, the 1.35 --> 2.01 connection failed. Why? One would have to say that it's the 1.35 and the camera because the Mac computer didn't change.

Now at 1.35
When I connect to a PC or Mac using the USB-C port on the laptop, the camera connects and I can transfer pics. This is how I normally function.

If I use the Sony supplied USB-C to USB-A cable to a PC labtop (Mac doesn't have USB-A ports any longer), the camera does not connect. So is the issue with the camera or with the "newer" Windows 11 USB drivers.

So, can you guys be so kind to plug your A1 into a your PC USB-A port and tell me that it connects at what ever your version of firmware?

Before I send the camera off to Sony for repairs, I want to do my best to make sure it's the camera and not the USB drivers.

Thnaks,

Rob

As a follow up. I connected the wife's A7CR to the PC's USB-A port using 5 different cables. All of them connected.

So it's my sad conclusion is that something is wrong with that A1's USB-C port.

I will post to the forum what solution that I end up with.

Not an answer to your USB connection question but is it possible to update Sony firmware via a memory card? (i.e. download the software to your card (SD or CF) and then boot the camera with the card in the slot? That is how I've updated my Canon and Nikon cameras. I don't have a Sony Alpha camera so unsure if that is an option or not.

With Canon and Nikon cameras, the firmware update file has to be in the root directory not a sub folder. Did Sony customer service mention anything about where the file is on your laptop? May be a wild goose chase but that is something I would look into before sending it off to Sony for repair.

I believe that capability to update the firmware from a SD card in the latest Sony 2.02 firmware version. Which is where I want to go.

Maybe the Sony service center has a hack to burn a new operation system onto the camera internal memory much like when you have to rebuild your PC operating system, bypassing their upgrade app, which could be buggy.

Thanks,

Rob
