I hope the presence of a small coastal ship doesn't disqualify this image from being 'backcountry'.
After scrambling down the cliff, and recuperating from the effort with the assistance of a flask of hot chocolate, I was able to walk across the emerging mud flats to photograph the migratory shorebirds that spend their southern (non-breeding) summer here.
The 'horizon' in this photo is lumpy because the open ocean beyond is separated from this not-quite pristine watery wildlife refuge by some of the world's largest sand islands (hence the calm waters of Moreton Bay). Beyond the islands, over the Pacific Ocean proper, a just-discernible cloud bank hangs over the East Australian Current (endless warm water flowing south from the equator).
So… this is where the waders of Siberia and Alaska choose to escape for the winter!
