Speedlite Recommendation for D500

I would like to take some images in the evening/night in my garden of foxes and badgers that sometimes visit.

I’ve never used a flash before, and am considering secondhand SB910, but I don’t know how long bulbs last, and do I need a separate device if using the flash off the camera to communicate?

Any advice would be most appreciated.

Flash light will give unnatural pictures in low ambient light. My SB800s still work fine and you see a lot of older models still in use too.

When I was considering a new SB910, I got a Godox V860mkii for less than half the price. AA powered versions are cheaper and called the TT something85, but the lithium power pack versions not only give more than double the number of flashes, they recycle in under 2 seconds at full power against 6 seconds for AA powered versions. Radio triggering is also more reliable than IR triggering.

The Nikon flashes have not seen much use since. Using a flash (or flashes) is an art in itself and takes time to perfect.

I can recommend Godox flashes, they are easy to set up and the can all control each other witlessly without any extra remote triggers.
I took this picture of this little guy in the middle of the night with my Godox flash.

Note that if you are using only one flash you will need to use a flash commander on the camera.
