Squeaking Lens

I have recently acquired a 200 - 400 mm AFS 1.4 G lens, which seems to have an annoying squeaking sound when focusing, although the auto focus works well. I am lead to understand that this lens has not been used in 3 -4 years. Any thoughts of how to stop this noise would be appreciated

A Squeaking AF motor usually means one or two things, 1) It's failing or 2) the oil in the focusing gears has dried up/sitting at the bottom. This tends to happen when a lens has not been used for a long time. Sometimes it goes away after you use it for a while, that is what happens if I haven't used my 200-400mm F4G VR for a while. If using it does not fix the problem, I cannot think of anything other than having Nikon service the lens. I don't think there is anything you as a user can do, unless you have the skills and know how to take it apart.
