Hi everyone,

As a new possessor of a 2nd hand nikon 500mm F4E fl, I am, to be honnest, very surprise of the sound level of the autofocus of my 500mm F4E copy and I wonder if it is standard.
It is the first time I use this kind of big primes so I might be naive on the "silent" advertising. Autofocus sound has never been an issue on my other smaller lenses (500mm 5.6pf, 200-500 f5.6) that I consider virtually totally silent.
I am well aware that it is very difficult to evaluate the sound level from a video without any comparaison, but maybe ears used to this sound could confirm if this is standard, I would be very grateful for any insight (here a video on youtube of my lense autofucsing) :

The "normal" autofocus is noticeable from an other room at 10m distance for exemple. And the reset at the end of a "hunting" pattern is very loud and would scare wildlife for sure (I guess it is possible to prevent it with some training, by canceling the hunting pattern before it occurs).
I understand the glass to moove is bigger, the distance and speed greater than the 500mm and 200-500mm f5.6 lenses. Nevertheless I have found no information as this being a drawback for wildlife (and it certainly looks so for my lens) and the difference in sound level is several times greater than I expected.
On the contrary the VR is very silent and I consider it inaudible even at very short distance (except for the normal "klong" at the start and end).

Thank you in advance for any insight on that matter.

I used a Nikon 600mm f/4 E lens for years and it focused quietly, similar to the 500mm f/5.6 PF lens that you mention in your post. I never heard it make the sounds documented in your video. I would suggest having your lens examined by Nikon.

Thank you a lot for your feedback, I still have a few days to send back the lens, even though it will be an expensive and time-consuming operation given the size and insurrance. I might take this road if the potential issue is confirmed or at least suspected.
I have also sent the video directly to nikon support, but by experience it may take too long to have an answer and they will probably ask to see the lens before any statement (I hope to be wrong).

Thank you for the insights. I do fear some grinding that could just be some grease missing (fixed with some "cheap" service) but I probabably shoudldn't take the risk, given the price (around 1200$) to change the AF.
