Striated Heron, Butorides striatus - Australian species.
This series from "my" berm in the Coomera river, Oxenford QLD
I could not believe my eyes, this heron actually dives right into the water, totally submerged sometimes, then resurfaces fish(less). I have never seen our SA herons do this. They are more the wait and strike/stab type. Not this guy, he goes into the water, boots and all. Saw him do this a couple of times over several weeks so it must be his preferred way of fishing! The series is from where he has already turned in the water to get back to his rock.

Nice Callie. Thanks for sharing the behavior.

JIM

Is it just an individual Striated Heron that has this behavior, or do they all do this diving thing? Very nice series.
Icarus, thanks. No clue! I hoped the Ozzies could tell. However, I must say that I also saw their Little Egret - your Snowy Egret and our Little egret's cousin, also dive in, even from flight as he launched off the rock and on the wing and into the water. Real kamikaze birds!
