We had a mohave rattlesnake in our backyard a couple of months ago (and before we had a snake barrier installed) and I took some photos but not nearly as good as yours. Great job!

I have frequently been "surprised" when birding in AZ or NM. No post-processing or cropping.
Nikon D500; Nikkor 300mm f4e PF with 1.4 x TC @420 mm equivalent; manual; 1/2000; f 5.6; auto ISO at 640

Yup, I bet it was a surprise! Good capture! We ran into one this summer in the badlands, always make the heart beat a bit faster when you hear that rattle.

Thanks, Steve. So...for a few minutes after the encounter one tends to look down a lot. But soon ... looking up for birds. Not 20-min after this encounter, another!

Wow...

We have Copperheads & Water Moccasins in our area and I've photographed the latter many times, but I'm more of a 500mm + (even on the D500) kinda guy and always from a position that I can move quickly. LOL!

Well done!

Thanks. My "trick" is to have my bird watching buddy with me. He then moves slowly back and forth in front of the snake. The snake tracks his movements, leaving me to shoot in peace. I can never talk him into moving closer so I can film the strike. I guess he is not that good of a buddy!

Nice photos though definitely not a “Nope Rope” (Rattler) kinda guy. In part I’m hearing impaired and hiking in Central Oregon I have walked past buzzing Rattlers only to have my wife point them out to me a few times.
