The Tawny (or Brown Owl) is one of 8 species found in Spain --- this one was photographed in the Montseny Mountains just North of Barcelona. Nocturnal hunters they tend to remain silent on perches and glide down onto their unsuspecting prey, usually small rodents, but also on amphibians, insects and birds when given the chance.
They are very sedentary, for example, when a young fledges it often finds its own habitat within a radius of 12.5 miles from the nest where it was born. Once a mate is found it pairs for life.
