Temporarily deactivating AF-on

I use the AF-on button for focus with shutter button release. This is great except however I am acquiring a remote control unit and want to release the shutter AND focus/refocus for each shot rather than "lock" the focus and hope that it has hit the subject when releasing the shutter. (Bird) Any suggestions for a quick workaround please.

Not exactly sure if this is what you mean, but I have an SMDV rfn-4s wireless remote shutter trigger (that i had bought for a previous dslr body), and use it on my z8 all the time. If you enable shutter button focus (I think menu A6) in camera, and the focus mode is set to AF Area, you can half press the remote shutter button and it will autofocus on a bird anywhere in the frame (with subject detection on), then with a full press you are snapping pictures. Just like if you were using the shutter button.

Not sure if the SMDV remote is still available new, but this one sold under a different name looks identical.

Doesn't your remote have an AF button, or a programmable on that could be used for that? I know some remotes have that, but not all of them. I've only used the Snapbridge app so far, which allows to focus by pressing on the screen, but it takes an awful long time to connect, initially, so it's hardly a viable permanent solution.

At worst, you can setup a user mode, but it's a little cumbersome (e.g. if you reconfigure something, the user mode has to be updated, too).

If your remote release doesn’t have a dedicated AF-ON button then I’d probably add menu item a6 (AF Activation) to MY Menu to be able to quickly switch between shutter release AF activation and BBAF.

When using remote without AF-On, enable shutter release instead of back button focus. Checking auto focus accuracy is tricky with remote release. Check subject detection latching to subject eyes in monitor or prefocus with sufficient depth of field to account for any in accuracies before releasing shutter through remote.
