Mounted my Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 manual focus prime on a D780 and shot a short series of pics from f/1.4 to f/16, changing the aperture only. Initially the test was for sharpness of the JPEGs generated in camera. What it ended up was a case study in depth of field for the old lens. Found it interesting, as the aperture got stopped down, the image file size increased, on average, by about ten percent. My copy of the old lens has a sweet spot of f/5.6 to f/11. It did bring up another challenge too; using that old manual focus prime and getting the most sharpness out of it for landscape and seascape shots. I presume, once I focus that lens on something in the foreground, I can easily recompose the shot and get the acceptable sharpness and depth of field I would like? Is it possible to focus stack using a manual focus lens?
