And didn't really look up even after he hit! Looking at his phone in his lap? You can't miss the latest text whatever happens!!

Any recommendations?

That's the dumbest thing I have ever seen. What was with all the acting at the end?
What are residential speeds where you live?

Hope everyone is ok and nobody got hurt... We have dash cams fitted on almost 90% of cars in Singapore. The footage is very useful for court disputes and insurance claims. Taxi companies in SG have retrofitted all of them with dash cams front and back.

Any recommendations?

I got one by Nextbase mine is the 312GW version now superceeded by the 322GW. I got this one because of the information it stores and also this. it shows map direction of travel speed braking as well as video

Hope your wife wasn’t hurt @realspeed.

I’m driving with dashcams since my car insurance demands for it.
A lot of dashcams outthere but also a lot of weak or mediocre devices.

A list of minimal requirements, might be helpfull @Steve
HD or better resolution (you want to be able to read the licenseplate in case of a hit and run)
Wide field of view of at least 140 degrees
Good lowlight performance with some sort of HDR.
Parking mode
Ability to pair with Cloud and/or smartphone
Possibillity to use a rearcamera simultaneously.
GPS module and accelometers
Good batterylife or hardwired (I prefer the last)
As little as possible, Why? one of my daughters had a Garmin dashcam and she got involved in an accident.
Her ‘opponent’ saw the device and told his insurancecompany she had footage, but she hadn’t (hence my preference for hardwired devices)
because she hadn’t plugged the unit in and the battery went flat.
She was sued by the government for destroying/withholding evidence resulting in a substantial fine and conditional jailtime..

I’m a fan of hardwired, stealth, high-end dashcams like the Thinkware U800 I had in my former car and the U1000 in my new car (which will also be in my wife’s new car).
Not the cheapest option, (nor the most expensive) but it ticks all my personal requirements.
I love the simplicity and stealth. once installed by the dealer, you can forget about it untill you get a notification (like I got last summer) on your phone someone bumped your car or the like and you have the footage to prove it.
Otherwise it would have been a hit and run.

I looked at the Nextbase dashcams @realspeed recommended.
From the specs very nice cams if you’re willing to accept the display (like the majority does.)

I don’t know about US regulations regarding sound?
Some countries overhere prohibit to record speech for privacy reasons.
Might be something to look at before you buy.
Thanks so much for all the info! I really didn't think there was much to it, but my eyes are open now!

I'll check it out.

Is that in the UK? Maybe a tourist from the continent, this could very well happen, they drive on the right hand and after taking a curve (coming from the left) they may go back to the right out of habit... :-(

Looks like the old man got hurt! Any word?

No he is ok. His insurance company are trying to get business by offering to pay for all damage to both cars and £200 compensation bribe to Sue. Well they know what they can do with a bribe. SHOVE IT WHERE THE SUN DON'T SHINE
They are going to have to pay the lot anyway

My wife and I have Garmin DriveAssist LMT 50 GPS units in both our cars. Both these units have built-in dashcams. On two occasions the footage recorded showed the insurance and police that the other party was at fault for fender benders I was involved in. The minute they see the footage it changes the conversation and attitude. I work in sales in the Greater Toronto Area and I'm on the roads here, in traffic, almost every working day. So while one does one's best, you cannot always avoid every collision. Like the time I was waiting at a red light at an intersection and two cars crossing in front of me collided, one of them skidding into my car.

The other driver in the original video posted in this thread was clearly at fault, no question. I do cringe, however, at the lack of any road markings, yield or stop signs anywhere visible at that intersection. I believe the local municipality needs to do better here as well.

I have had a no frills dash cam for about 6 years now. In that time the only accident was a fellow rear ending me and no contention to his being at fault.
There are a lot of eye opening videos on YouTube showing people stopping on freeways and backing up into other vehicles to simulate a rear end collision. And resulting neck problems to claim. The car with front end damage will almost always found to be at fault. Also pedestrians flopping onto hoods and falling to the pavement. Insurance would pay but why let fraud be lucrative?
A couple of months ago I was behind another 2 car accident - I gave a copy of the video to the officer as the two drivers could not agree on what happened. As a lesson in human nature I did not recollect a third turning car blocking the view line but it was there in the video.
Good peace of mind for little money.
