I am guessing he was as close as maybe 100 metres! Given the internet hype that they are capable of speeds up to 40kph, if he was angry and charged, he would have been on top of you in less than 20 seconds. Ouch, would have squashed the D4 & 600 like a peanut...

If this big bull was in musth, (doesn't appear to be) that's a possibility, otherwise give me a close encounter with a Bull, than a mother with a young calf any day.

Agree Marc, - we are not fond of ellies up close and personal, especially the moms with calves, been chased already once too many times, so tend to be very careful around them!
Peter, we try to sort of place the vehicle so that we can escape on the shoot it the ellie should hoot!
