The Circle of Life in Yellowstone - Black Wolf attacking Cow Elk

There is a long story behind this photo - as there always is. This was my favorite personal image of 2022, not because I witnessed this attack close-up, but because it is a scene that has played out a million times or more in Yellowstone. The wolf was circling the elk relentlessly, not attacking but wearing down the elk's energy reserves. Dodging in and out, this shot with the wolf appearing between the elk's legs with a sharp face and eye just epitomized the Circle of Life, in all its beauty and ferocity.
