The Great River Road traces the course of the Mississippi River for 3,000 miles through 10 states. They are Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana. Traveling through America’s rich history, vibrant culture, and inspiring natural beauty. This section of The Great River Road, includes the 33-mile Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway between Grafton and Hartford. The entire road has been designated an All-American Road by the Federal Highway Administration. In 1966, this section of the Great River Road was constructed in many sections by blasting through limestone cliffs. It was constructed as a scenic highway, largely due to the inspiration of John D. McAdams, for whom it was dedicated and originally named McAdams Highway.
