Famous as the "World's Only Surviving Wrought Iron Bridge

The Bollman Truss Semi-Suspension Bridge has been fighting (and beating) the forces of oxidation since 1869.

Nicely composed first image and it works well with the snow. Thanks for sharing as I'd never heard of it and looked it up for additional information. Very interesting.

Thanks, yes the bridge has an interesting history, you need to check out the history of the Savage Mill. The reason the bridge was built to serve the mill. Savage Mill is now a historic site, has a nice restaurant, and small shops inside catering to the Arts. Check out the paranormal study done in 2012, the mill is said to have ghosts that have been seen on occasion.

Also the bridge was (according to wikipedia) originally built elsewhere and moved to the current location after 30 years to serve the mill. But I'm an engineer and was mainly interested in the structural design. I was wondering whether the tension components are rod or cable. They're rods. And the members of the trusses that are in compression are cast iron and the members in tension are wrought iron. Figured I'd google it rather than ask here and clutter up your thread. Yet here we are anyway

I just" bumped" my Gillespie Dam and Bridge Post from last year for anyone who didn't see it. Only 100 years old but interesting Engineering, craftsmanship & durability.

Another 1860's model bridge still in use today. Fryeburg, Maine.View attachment 34444
Wow, what a great picture, all wooden or steel structure covered by wood? I had a brother that live in Palermo before he move to DE and wanted me to visit all the time. I would always respond " What day does Summer fall on " That's the day I will visit. Seems Maine has 4 seasons, Fall, Winter, Muddy!!, and SHORT summer. :)

Zouthavenbrug (2004) - Amsterdam, Holland. Significant contrast from the 1860's. What do you think Backcountry Gallery photographers will be shooting in 2170

Maine, lol ....the future of bridges, with computers designing the next generation of computers and computers able to run bridge stress analysis, more wild bridges coming I suspect. But then again, we may not need any roads or bridges by 2170, we will all FLY to work!!

HaHa. Unfortunately, suggest may need to change “we” to “they” in your last sentence.
