The Spanish Festoon is a spectacular spring butterfly, which inhabits most of the Iberian peninsula and southern France. It is also found in a few North African countries, and it is thought that the bizarre wing patterns effectively break up its shape to better thwart sharp-eyed predatory birds. Taken in my Spanish garden between Alicante and Valencia 22/04/18, with a D850 and nikkor micro 105mm. @f3 ISO 64, 1/640 Sec., handheld.

Beautiful shot.
Thanks birdied, it has taken me 15 years to spot these super looking butterflies, having searched over many different Spanish habitats, and then this one appears in my Spanish garden unannounced--typical, but a great moment for me !

Ah David, I have never seen this lep before, not even an image! The colour combination on the wings is awesome and then the complimentary spots on the body!

Yes Callie, its geometric zig--zag patterns are pretty unique in the insect world, where evolutionary survival has developed more along absolute mimicry, camouflage and/or "startle" (like big eye markings or fluorescent scales, suddenly presented when disturbed ) pathways !
