Thoughts on inquiring new lens

Recently bought a Z8 and looking to buy another lens. The longest reach lens I have now is the 300mm 3.8 VRll. I've used the 1.4 extender but feel a little more reach would be nice. I mostly shoot deer and elk but I also shoot birds occasionally. I also shoot a lot of sports. Thinking the Z 400mm 4.5 would be nice but the 500 pf prices are very tempting. What about the older 500mm and 600mm lenses would that be going backwards with all the new Z lenses?

Thanks in advance

From someone that is too heavily invested in F mount glass, to someone that is not. First my wife shot with a 300 F2.8 with the 1.4 TC, one of the sharpest combos that I’ve seen. I would suggest spending your money and investing in the new Z lenses. Take advantage of the communication benefits and options between lens and the camera. Especially the “S” line of glass with the improvements in the lens coatings. One exception maybe just maybe the 500 pf. You’ve purchased a very fine camera I would pair it up with the finest possible lenses available that you can afford. For your information the FTZ adapter has worked without any issues with the F mount lenses, however if if I had the choice of F mount or Z mount I would definitely go with the Z mount.

I'm in the same boat as you with the holy trinity, 105, 60, 14-24 2.8. Yes the FTZ has been working great. I feel that the 300 + 1.4 TC should be just a little clearer. It may be my TC not sure. Thanks for you thoughts.

A good cheap option if you want a fixed length lens would be the 500mm PF if you infrequently shoot birds. You could add a 1.4 TC to get to 700mm on those occasions when you needed more reach for birds, or your wildlife was distant. I used the 500mm PF and loved it even though I had to have a FTZ adapter on my Nikon Z8 to take advantage of it. I just traded my 500mm PF and some other gear to reduce the purchase price of a Z 800mm I have wanted for a while. I believe the 500mm PF was sharper at its focal length than the 800mm is. While a zoom won't be as sharp if you want flexibility, and you want a cheap option the Z 180-600 makes sense. I haven't used the Z 600mm f/6.3 but if you want a Z option that is sharper and longer that would seem to make sense.

It is alll a question of what you can afford and what you shoot.

Generally z lenses are better than their f mount counterpart and the future is with z.

The cheapest way to get longer range is with the 180-600mm zoom.

The 400mm f4.5 is a pretty sweet lens very compact and very sharp.

The 800mm pf is a superb lens for the long stuff.

While the f mount 500mm pf is a great le ns the 600mm pf is better and has longer reach.

Think strategically and have a plan.

If you can never invest more than 2k in new Len set then the 180-600 will do.

If you can do more think gaps. If you already have a goof 300 then 600mm makes sense. Slap a 1.4 tc on that and you have a system.

My personal favorite however is the 400mm f4.5 and the 800mm pf. That is a magical combination.
