While on our last trip to Australia, we encountered 3 fairy wren species. I have enclosed 2 images of each here. The fairy wrens are small, but often stunning birds. The males are more brightly colored than the females, but the females are attractive in their own right. Many species have an unusual breeding system in which pairs set up a nest, but both the males and females often mate outside the pair. The males here are shown in breeding plumage, they are duller and may appear like the females in eclipse plumage. The first two images shown the Splendid Fairy Wren (also written as Fairy-wren), the second two photos show a pair and a male Purple-backed Fairy Wren, and the last two show a pair and a male Purple-crowned Fairy Wren. All photos were taken with a Nikon Z9 and the Nikon Z 600mm f/4 TC VR S with the TC engaged.
